The Euckla Railway Disaster

n the early morning at 4:30 am
Iof May 19, 1908, EUCLA village of
Australia became the site of a terrible
tragedy. A subway (train) was
travelling from Centila to Leeds with
45 passengers aboard, but because
of thick fog, the crew failed to see a
red signal before reaching Eucla railway station. They crashed and
derailment ignited some gas cylinders, causing fire. A total of 10
passengers lost their lives, 25 passengers were injured and 10 of them
got saved. Among the two of the deceased passengers were an
unidentified young boy and girl.
The fire burned these two children beyond recognition. They could not
be matched to any other passengers and no one ever came forward to
